Terreform ONE at New Lab Beta, Brooklyn Navy Yard

"...The loftlike space, known as New Lab, is to be unveiled by local and state officials on Thursday... The idea driving the project was to bring together a variety of creative people and have them share equipment, like laser cutters and three-dimensional printers, that would be too costly for them to rent or buy on their own. David Belt, the developer of New Lab, said he hoped to do for manufacturers what the M.I.T. Media Lab in Cambridge, Mass., had done for technology researchers..." NY Times, May 8, 2013

E+C: Environment and Cities, An Urban Research Journal published by Terreform ONE

The E+C (Environment and Cities) journal addresses contemporaneous urban design topics in both detailed and extensive arguments. It has provoked an architectural and urban discourse uniquely embedded in good practice models. E+C considers how city design might implement the logic of ecological science to move outside conventional notions of sustainability.  Questioning the aura of green design, the schemes and writings presented in every journal focus on upending architecture’s ecological routine. Functioning at multiple scales, the works propose a tactic concurrently both drastic and sensible, concentrating analytical environmental issues through attuned and researched solutions.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
ONE Prize Award aims to explore the social, economic, and ecological possibilities of urban transformation. This year’s competition is set in the context of severe climate dynamism.  How can cities adapt to the future challenges of extreme weather? The ONE Prize is a call to deploy sophisticated design to alleviate storm impact through various urban interventions such as: protective green spaces, barrier shorelines, alternative housing, waterproofing technology, and public space solutions. We wish to reinvigorate infrastructure and repurpose spaces towards environmental adaptation in order to put design in the service of the community.

PRIZES
Since 2010, One Prize has awarded over $40,000 in in prize money. Dr. Joachim on Air at WPR

Over the past two centuries the U.S. urban population has ballooned to more than 82 percent. Half of the world's population now live in cities. And, every week more than a million people are being added to existing cities. How will we live healthily, sustainably and happily in the cities of the future? Guests: Mitchell Joachim, Co-President, Terreform ONE, Associate Professor at NYU and 2011 TED Senior Fellow. Wired magazine listed him in 2008 as one of "15 People the Next President Should Listen To," and Rolling Stone magazine included him in their list of "The 100 People Who Are Changing America. " Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3), founder and co-chair of the Livable Communities Task Force. His many awards include: National Distinguished Service Award from the American Public Transit Association, and Honorary Memberships in the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Institute of Architects.
